JT's friends performing
A personal note from Samuel Legitimus
A the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the legendary album SWEET BABY JAMES, we proposed to some international fans of JT (coming from France, Germany, Belgium, USA, Australia, West Indies...) all musicians in their own rights - to celebrate the event in revisiting one of the eleven songs of this famous LP. The only rule was to save us from the the mirror image of the original version, "Try to take inspiration from the great diversity of styles pervading the album (pop, rock, country, blues, traditional, jazz...) Make the song your own and return the jewel in a new case!" I must say that the result surpassed our expectations. Our only hope is that this CD - which represents a kind of tribute to the numerous talents of JT - provides you as much joy as we all have to make it up.

Jose Martinez

A note from Claus Ulrich:
Anywhere like heaven: This song reminds me on 1969, when I moved from a remote place on the countryside to a big city. I felt lost, about to lose my spirit, missing the „.. natural pillow for my head..“, losing my secret place, my own freedom, myself! I played acoustic guitar, double bass and did some Fingersnapping/Handclapping.
Something in the way she moves: It was the line: “She has the power to go where no one else can find me, and silently remind me ...” that made me cover the song. To me, this is a song about depressions. I played acoustic guitar and double bass on this one.
Steamroller: I loved to work with Tom in Thionville, who added the harmonicas and french 2nd verse vocals. Samuel in Paris sang the 3rd verse in french. I played acoustic guitar and double bass and sang the 1st verse and the ending together with Samuel. This wouldn't have been possible without the internet. It was pure joy to be part of this, it was magic! Let me say it again: I feel absolutely honored to be part of this, it's just fantastic! Thank you! Love from Hamburg. Claus

I've known your music for 33 YEARS. Wherever I go with my guitar I sing your songs, and this is my greatest musical joy. Happy Birthday "Sweet Baby James".... and what a pleasure to sing it for you ! hope you'll like it. Merci James. Marc .
Message from Jérôme Leclerq:
Hello James,
I discovered your songs just one year ago. Your music accompanied me everyday as I went though some difficult times and your voice has been a real balm. So when this tribute CD was planned, I decided to take part of it. I wanted to express the comfort your music brought to in my life. Being exactly the same age as SWEET BABY JAMES, I wanted to put a special mark on this birthday. But, above all, through this modest contribution, I wanted to express my gratitude for the help you gave me though your songs. I choose «Oh Suzanna» from Stephen Foster because I felt a great compassion for the character who travelled the american territory from South to North, who confront many dangers without receiveing any support. And I also liked the Jazz-like arrangement of your take of the song. You'll excuse the absence of singing, something really strange on an album which pays tribute to a great singer. It is not by provocation, but being also a great guitarist, you'll understand that I throw myself away more easily with a guitar. So, I wish a happy birthday to Sweet Baby James and wish you, James, all you deserve. Jérôme Leclercq.

Message from Alexandre Lazerges
Merci Sam d'avoir aiguisé mon imagination !!! Alexandre.
l' histoire de Handy Men:
Comment from Eric TOLLET
What a pleasure we get in the realization of this tribute, and I am very proud of the result. All participants gave the best of them, it is so magnificent and well in excess of what I could expect. I chose the song "Suite For 20 G" because it seemed obvious to interpret and that it was not really my favorite song…. a little bit like a challenge. As with many songs of James, I ended up much loved this song after I have listened it again and again. I understood in the meaning and its original, very subtle construction and takes its value when you know the story: For "Sweet Baby James", Taylor needed a small advance of $ 20000, production had accepted on condition that James provide them an eleventh title, what he did, and with its well-known humor, he titled this song "Suite for 20 G" therefore a suite for 20000 $.
Samuel Légitimus and Jérome Leclerc have significantly helped me especially for choirs and for the establishment of my voice. Thanks to them and special recognition to Jerome for some guitar parts made by him, his ideas, his talent and his patience for sound recording.
I've discovered James Taylor in 1975 at the exit of the "Gorilla" album, by hazard in a disc shop. Since that day, James always remained my favorite artist by his talent, his incredible voice, his lyrics, his guitar playing so thin and so special and for the man himself. I can't describe the emotion that he provides to me at each listening but one said about James that he is the musician of the musicians... and I confirm. Eric TOLLET
A note from Eugene Ruffolo
I was first led to the Paris JT Forum by my dear friend Doc Schneider. I'm always thrilled to meet a group of like-minded musical people who, like me, share a deep love and reverence for the music of the great James Taylor. It was great fun to work on these few songs, and to get a chance to collborate with Doc. It flowed out of us freely, the only problem being choosing what to record from a collecton of pure gems. A secondary problem was ,of course, deciding how to approach a song, the quintessential version of which has already been recorded. That's always the challenge in covering great songs. But the result is fun, and in listening to the various contributions on the CD, I was particularly struck by the indelible imprint that James and his unique style of playing and singing has branded in all of our brains. Long live the King. Eugene Ruffolo.
