LOVE MAKES THE WORLD / REVIEW by Mathew Greenwald

I firmly believe that the older you are, the better you get,Bob Dylan said that a few years ago when he go the standard query, How much longer can you keep doing this? Well, it's certainly been true in the case of many artists, the most recent example being Carole King.
She's just uleashed a bona fide masterpiece, "Love Makes The World", on her own Rockingale Records. She's a national treasure, with her extensive song catalog standing firmly in the rarified air with songwriters such as George Gershwin, Brian Wilson and Jerome Kern. "Love Makes The World" doesn't just remind us of that, but shows her taking her art to even greater hights.
What Carole King does on this album is something she is quite adept at (especially throughout her solo career)- making the world and the distance between people smaller. There is a universal quality to her work, even her most intimate love songs. Compositions such as "Monday without You" and "The Reason" distill emotions that we all feel from time to time, and usually often throughout our lives. In this way, I ofen look at King as almost a folk writer, as opposed to only a (brilliant) pop songwriter.Performance-wise, it's the one of her strongest albums. Simple yet effective arrangements and a great diversity of styles and the albums' programming is pure genius. For example, following the two gorgeous, midtempo opening songs (the title

track and "You Can Do Anything"), "The Reason" - which is short of a centerpiece to the record- begins deceptively with a melancholy, gospel-style piano pattern. The song slowly builds, resolving itself on a dynamic, powerful chorus. Yet, the following a stately bridge that is somehat remincent of John Lennon, King throws in a modulation that ends the song through the roof, aided and abatted by a powerful electric guitar solo and King's own gospel-soaked vocal wailing. There's a lot more to discover on "Love Makes The World" and part of the fun is getting there, therefore I won't give away too much here, as the listener will no doubt find his or her favourites. Mark my words, this record is going to age very, very well, and will become one of those albums that folks will bring to a party in lieu of a bottle of fine wine. In these days of doubt, this album will make you feel to use Carole's own words - "Safe again". Like many veteran artists, Carole King has found artistic and marketing freedom by releasing the album herself, on her own label (Rockingale). Although it will be available at all traditional retail outlets, it's also available online, namely at www.caroleking.com.
